Liverpool star Jordan Henderson has put pen to paper on a new and improved five year contract extension that will keep the England international at Anfield until 2020.

With club legend and captain Steven Gerrard moving on in the summer, Henderson has been heavily tipped to take over as Liverpool skipper.

The 24-year-old, who was a £20m summer signing from Sunderland in 2011, has really stepped up to the plate for the Reds in the last couple of years and has quickly turned himself into a vital player for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Speaking after signing the new deal, Henderson said; “There has been talk about it for a while now. I’m over the moon that it’s finally done.

“It’s brilliant news for me to commit my future to this football club – I really feel that it’s a good time for us to look forward to the future, with the squad we’ve got, the manager, the size of the club and the fans we’ve got. I really think, over the next few years, we can challenge and start winning trophies.

“That’s the next phase; we’ve improved massively over the last few years, and I think the next phase for us is to start challenging for titles and trophies as well.”
