Germany and USA qualified for the next round of the World Cup in Brazil, seeing Ghana and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal leave the competition.
Heading in to the final games of Group G, any team could qualify but Joachim Low’s German team were determined to produce a performance against an American side that had battled well so far.
And, Thomas Muller was on hand to score the only goal of the game, netting his ninth goal in nine World Cup games. USA would wait on the result of Ghana versus Portugal, knowing that a win for Ghana by two goals or more would see them eliminated, but and own goal and one from Cristiano Ronaldo saw any chances of that ruled out.
Jurgen Klinsmann’s side would therefore advance, causing shock to many, eliminating Ghana, who finished bottom and Portugal, who finished third.
