Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney looks set to miss the remainder of the season after picking up a knee injury against Everton.

The England and United captain limped off at the end of the 3-0 defeat to Everton on Sunday with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.

Robin van Persie returned to replace Rooney for the final minutes of the game, but fears have now grown at Old Trafford after further examinations of the strikers knee.

United boss Louis van Gaal insisted at the time that scans needed to be made before a timescale could be given on Rooney’s return but their silence on the injury since Sunday has sparked reports that the striker could now miss the rest of the season.

A brief statement was made by United on Tuesday night, with the club saying they are fearful of ligament damage.
