Manchester United striker Robin van Persie is asking Louis van Gaal to keep him at the club beyond the summer, despite a lack of playing time.

The Premier League side have struggled for consistency this season but still have a fighting chance of gaining automatic qualification for the Champions League.

Boss Louis van Gaal has come under heavy critique but it is understood that he will be handed a £150m transfer fund in June.

The Dutch coach is now understood to be keen to push that further towards the £200m mark with the sales of some key United players and Robin van Persie has been identified as a possible sale.

The former Arsenal striker has been a shadow of his past self, scoring just 10 goals in all competitions.

However, despite Van Gaal’s pending decision to sell the Netherlands’ striker, Van Persie is doing all he can to remain at Old Trafford.

It is understood that the striker has asked Van Gaal to remain at the club, despite becoming a reserve striker.
