England star ‘haunted’ by failure

Wilshere

England midfielder Jack Wilshere has opened up about his despair at seeing the Three Lions crash out of the World Cup prematurely and claims he is “haunted” by their demise.

Roy Hodgson’s men exited the tournament with a game to spare courtesy of successive 2-1 defeats at the hands of Italy and Uruguay respectively.

They went into Tuesday’s swansong against Costa Rica playing only for pride and failed to find the back of the net, limping out of the competition on the back of a 0-0 draw after Hodgson named an experimental and younger line-up.

It was the first time since 1958 that England went through the entire group stage process without picking up a victory, but the manager has already been backed in public by the FA to continue in his role until the European Championships in France in 2016.

Wilshere was handed a rare start in the Costa Rica game but struggled to rediscover the kind of form which has so often earned him rave reviews at club level with Arsenal.

And he told followers on social media site Twitter that he is still hurting after England’s untimely exit in Brazil.

He said: “Lying in my bed thinking about the World Cup, this feeling will haunt me for a while!

“Only good thing is I have my son snoring next to me!”
