Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano has admitted that he wants Manchester United target Dani Alves to stay at the Camp Nou.

Brazilian defender Alves looks increasingly likely to leave the club this summer after rejecting a deal on Thursday, prompting speculation that he could be set to agree terms with either Man United or Paris Saint Germain.

However, central defender Mascherano has called on the Catalan club to keep hold of the former Sevilla defender.

“Dani Alves has been one of the best players this club has ever had,” the Argentine is quoted as saying by the club’s official website. “He’s a great performer.

“I’d like him to stay. He’s an amazing person, a real fun guy and very professional.”

Xavi Hernandez’s future with the La Liga leaders is also up for debate at present with some reports claiming he will depart for a spell in Qatar.

“It would be great if he could stay here because of all he offers. He is everything being an FC Barcelona player is about – the way he behaves and the example he sets for youngsters.”
