Manchester United are ready to scupper Arsenal’s hope of completing a £34.5m move for Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain.

The Argentine striker was expected to join the Gunners in 2013 from Real Madrid but decided to join Serie A side Napoli instead, prompting boos and jeers from Arsenal fans when the two sides met in a pre-season friendly that same year.

However, Gunners fans have been largely optimistic this season in their hopes to sign the former Real Madrid man, having listened to reports earlier this week claiming a deal worth £34.5m was set to be completed.

Higuain is keen to leave Napoli after growing fed up with life in Italian football but Arsenal’s interest has now prompted Man United to also make contact with the Serie A club.

United boss Louis van Gaal believes Higuain can replace Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao next season and supply his side with goals.
