Chelsea are closing in on the signing of FC Tokyo midfielder Yoshinori Muto, according to the club’s president.

The Japanese international has been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in recent weeks with newspaper Sports Nippon claiming that Blues scouts spotted him and informed Chelsea bosses to make a move in early March.

Jose Mourinho’s side are now said to be close to agreeing a deal worth around £4m, and FC Tokyo chief Naoki Ogane has all-but confirmed the talks.

“It is true that Chelsea sent us an offer for Muto,” Ogane confirmed to Sports Nippon. “It is a formal offer with conditions. They want to acquire him in the summer”

Muto himself, however, has remained less coy on his current situation.

“I have not decided yet at all,” he added. “It is an honour for me to receive this offer from a great club.”

Ogane went on to discuss how Chelsea’s new shirt deal with Yokohama Rubber, has nothing to do with the deal.
