On this Day: Alan Shearer makes his Southampton debut

On this Day, April 8th 1988, Alan Shearer made his starting debut for Southampton at the age of just 17.

Shearer was promoted to the first team after spending two years with the youth squad and made his professional debut on March 26th 1988.

He would then go on to make his debut from the start against Arsenal, and would become the youngest player to score a hat-trick in the top division, surpassing Jimmy Greaves’ 30-year record.

Shearer would later go on to help Blackburn Rovers to a Premier League title, before scoring 206 goals in 406 games for Newcastle United…..
