Jamie Carragher has said that Manchester United’s recent form has cost Liverpool a Champions League place this season.
Former Anfield favourite Carragher believes it will be ‘virtually impossible’ for the Reds to qualify for the Champions League with a top four finish after they lost to Arsenal on Saturday 4-1.
The Reds have struggled since they lost to Man United before the international break and Carragher believes that the form of Louis van Gaal’s side has a big part to play in the recent failings of Brendan Rodgers’ side.
“It’s virtually impossible now [for Liverpool] to get the Champions League,” he told Sky Sports.
“[Manchester] United have got a couple of tough games coming up – Man City and Chelsea – they’d have to lose both of those. Liverpool win their next two games and they’ll be back in the race.
“But the form United are in at the moment… you can’t see them losing both of them. Liverpool losing to United was the big one. It’s going to be difficult to catch them.”
Liverpool return to action on Wednesday as they face an FA Cup sixth round replay at Blackburn.
