Real Madrid legend Zidane appointed B team coach

Real Madrid and France legend Zinedine Zidane has been appointed manager of Real Madrid’s reserve team Castilla.

The former Real Madrid favourite acquired top level coaching experience last season working at his old club alongside boss Carlo Ancelotti, as assistant first team coach.

The side Zidane will manage from the start of the 2014/2015 season are Real Madrid’s reserve (B) team Castilla, who are lost their relegation battle and have dropped down to the Spanish Segunda Division B.

Castilla will benefit from the 42-year-old Frenchman’s wealth of knowledge acquired from his time spent playing and coaching at their parent club Real Madrid.

As a player, Zidane featured in the midfield and had a creative attacking style, with an eye for a goal. He spent five years in the Real Madrid all-star team, during which time he won a La Liga title and the UEFA Champions League.

Prior to that, he played at Italian Serie A club Juventus for five years, winning silverware with the team as well as personal player awards including FIFA World Player of the Year (an honour he won three times during his football career) and Serie A Footballer of the Year.

A France International superstar, Zidane served his country for twelve years, making 108 appearances and netting 31 international goals.

He was awarded the Golden Ball honour in the 2006 World Cup which saw him hailed best player of the tournament, and that year France finished in second place behind World Cup winners Italy.

After the 2006 World Cup Zidane hung up his football boots, ending his spectacular 17 year playing career on a high.
