Manchester United target Kevin Strootman remains top of the wish-list despite doubts over the midfielder’s fitness, according to Manchester Evening News.

United have had long-term links with the midfielder, but had to hold off a move last summer due to undergoing surgery following a serious knee injury.

The Roma man made his arrival back to playing in November but has since suffered a setback, however according to reports he still remains one of Louis van Gaal’s top transfer targets.

The 25-year-old has been seen to be a higher priority over former player Paul Pogba, who has also been linked with a return to the Premier League.

But should the Dutch international fail to prove his fitness, Van Gaal remains open to exploring alternative options.

Manchester United are currently fourth in the Barclays Premier League having accumulated 59 points, one point behind Arsenal in third.
