With Chelsea’s reported transfer targets, could they follow in the footsteps of Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’ and go a whole season without losing a game in the league?

Much has been made of José Mourinho’s transfer targets this summer, with even the likes of Lionel Messi in the frame at one stage. However, we know from his dealings last season that Mourinho can attract the best players to Stamford Bridge. The big-name signings of Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas have proved inspired pieces of business, and surely Mourinho will make similar moves this summer.

One thing we know for certain about Mourinho’s dealings in the transfer window is that he only buys players he feels will improve his team. Other clubs such as Spurs have been accused of spending money for the sake of it, on players that have no real impact of their starting eleven – but not Mourinho. The Portuguese tactician targets specific weaknesses in his teams and buys to fill those gaps.

Many names have been brandished around already linked with summer moves to the Blues. While it’s certain that Mourinho won’t buy all these players, it’s certainly likely he will look to bring in some.

There are three particular signings that really could help turn Chelsea from a brilliant side, into an unbeatable one. José has recently been heavily linked with big-money moves for the Real Madrid trio that have become somewhat disillusioned at the Bernabeu – Raphael Varane, Sami Khedira and Gareth Bale.

While acquiring the trio will cost a small fortune, if anyone can do it, Mourinho can. He’s proved time and time again that he can raise the funds necessary to buy who he needs by selling players that don’t fit in with his vision at the club – the likes of Andre Schurrle, Romelu Lukaku and David Luiz being sold for close to £100million.

By adding the three Real Madrid men to the ranks at Chelsea he would create an incredibly strong team. The potential team sheet next season would read:

GK: Courtois

RB: Ivanovic

CB: Varane

CB: Terry

LB: Azpilicueta

CDM: Matic

CDM: Khedira

RAM: Hazard

CAM: Fabregas

LAM: Bale

ST: Costa

Bench: Cech (Possibly) – Zouma – Cahill – Oscar – Willian – Ramires – Remy

Those players, with Mourinho’s disciplined training, would certainly be one of the best teams in world football, certainly the best in the Premier League.

So, could Mourinho repeat Arsenal’s incredible achievement of the 2003/04 season? Well, if he works more of his magic in the transfer window then it’s certainly a not impossible.
