Chelsea’s proposed £40m bid for Raphael Varane may have to wait after the French defender became ‘important’ to Carlo Ancelotti after an injury to Pepe.

The French centre-back has struggled for game time this season, having struggled to force his way past both Sergio Ramos and Pepe in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting eleven.

The Frenchman is expected to sign for Chelsea this summer in a £40m deal, having had links with boss Jose Mourinho in the past.

Varane is now expected to move into the starting eleven and partner alongside Sergio Ramos.

However, an injury to Portuguese defender Pepe could now change that, with reports confirming the defenders absence: “After tests on the player Pepe by Real Madrid’s medical services, he has been diagnosed with an injury to his right thigh. Pending evolution,” a club statement read.
