After Sami Khedira confirmed he will be leaving Real Madrid this summer, Arsenal are leading the race to snap the German international up.

Sami Khedira has put himself on the transfer market, stating “I want to find new challenges for my career and continue to grow as a player.”

The World Cup winner has become a fringe player at the Bernabeu this season under Carlo Ancelotti after a serious knee injury saw him miss most of the 2013-14 season. With his contract up this summer there’s no doubt Khedira will be on the radar of several top clubs in Europe – Arsenal are currently top of that list.

For seasons now Arsene Wenger has been heavily criticised for failing to address the seemingly obvious missing link in the Arsenal midfield. They have quality attacking-minded midfielders in abundance, but few naturally look to break up the play or get involved in a crunching tackle.

While in recent weeks Francis Coquelin has demonstrated he can step in to fill that role, it’s highly likely Wenger will look to bring in someone more proven that the French youngster. Khedira, heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in the past, would relish the opportunity to join up with international teammates Per Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil, who will no doubt try and lure him to the Emirates.

Khedira seems the perfect fit for Arsenal. He’s a player not afraid of a challenge but he’s still excellent with the ball at his feet – a must for any Arsene Wenger player.
