Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has claimed that Diego Simeone turned down the chance to manage Manchester City last summer.

The 44-year-old Argentine coach has been at the forefront of Atletico Madrid’s successes both in La Liga and Europe of late, developing the likes of Diego Costa and Filipe Luis, who are both now at Chelsea.

And, Balague has claimed that the former midfielder could have taken over from Manuel Pellegrini at Man City, whilst he also turned down ‘huge’ offers from Paris Saint Germain.

“He had a huge offer from City, a huge offer from PSG, from two Italian teams, but he is close to signing a new deal with Atletico Madrid until 2020,” Balague told Sky Sports News.

“Five more years, and that is not normal in Spanish football but Atletico Madrid realise they need Simeone and Simeone realises he is happy with what Atletico Madrid does.”

Atletico are currently fourth in the La Liga table.
