Atletico Madrid say goodbye to Chelsea’s Courtois

Thibaut Courtois

Atletico Madrid are reported to have said goodbye to keeper Thibaut Courtois, who will return to Chelsea this summer.

The Belgian keeper first joined Chelsea in 2011 from Genk but failed to make an appearance for the English club, being loaned out to Spanish side Atletico Madrid within weeks of moving to London.

Three years with the Spanish capital side have seen Courtois make 37 league appearances in each of his three seasons at the club, establishing himself as arguably the best keeper in Spanish football.

Consistency saw him help Atletico win the Europa League in 2011/2012, the UEFA Super Cup and Copa del Rey, plus finish as a runner-up in the Champions League and win the La Liga title last season.

Interest from a number of big spending European clubs followed with Barcelona and Real Madrid keen to monitor the situation regarding his role at parent club Chelsea, which was uncertain due to Petr Cech’s role as first choice.

But, it is now understood that Cech is likely to moved on and replaced by Courtois, who will return this summer.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is currently undergoing a transformation to his squad, signing Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa already this summer, selling David Luiz in the meantime.
