Manchester United are set to announce the signing of Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera for a fee of £28.7m, according to Spanish reports.

Herrera, who has spent three seasons with Athletic Bilbao since joining them from Real Zaragoza in 2011, will see his release clause rise to £33.5m on July 1 but Spanish daily Marca have reported that Premier League side Man United have already agreed a deal.

United have been keen on Herrera since they met the Basque side in the Champions League two seasons ago and with new boss Louis van Gaal also a fan, it is now understood that the youngster will arrive at Old Trafford next season.

A contract of four years, worth £9.6m is said to be agreed by both parties and United are planning the right time to announce the deal.

The move has been negotiated by United at the same time as their pursuit for Southampton’s Luke Shaw, which has taken another step this week, seeing the Saints demand close to £35m for the England international full-back.
