Arsenal crashed out of the Champions League to Monaco on Tuesday evening, losing on the away goal rule.

Goals from Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey gave the Gunners a late hope in Monaco, but Arsene Wenger’s side were unable to find a third goal and exited the competition in the last-16 for the fifth time in five years.

Despite Arsenal’s need to score first, Monaco approached the game in good spirits and Joao Moutinho linked up with Dimitar Berbatov, but the Bulgarian striker was unable to force David Ospina into a save.

Wenger’s side then settled down and within 15 minutes they created a good chance as Giroud headed goalwards, but he failed to test the Monaco keeper.

His chance was a missed one but the French striker could not be stopped just after the half hour mark as he fired home into the roof of the net.

The second half was all Arsenal as Monaco sat and allowed the visitors to play, with Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla attempting to pull the strings.

Theo Walcott was hauled on late and he created a good chance instantly, hitting the post from close range, however, Aaron Ramsey, another substitute, was on hand to tap home the rebound and give the Gunners a slight hope.

However, they did little in the final period to find a third goal and will now concentrate on the league and FA Cup.
