Benzema edges closer to new Madrid contract

Karim Benzema is edging closer to a new contract with Real Madrid, according to Spanish daily Marca.

The French striker struggled to find the back of the net towards the end of last season, scoring just one goal in his final 13 games of the season.

But, his form for the French national team at the World Cup in Brazil is serving as a reminder to those doubters in Madrid that the former Lyon man still has what it takes, scoring three goals and creating two in his country’s first two group games.

The likes of Arsenal, Paris Saint Germain and Juventus have been credited with interest in the striker, but it is now being reported by Marca that negotiations between Benzema’s representatives and Madrid have taken a big step forward.

Benzema has one year remaining on his current deal at the Santiago Bernabeu and it is expected that a new deal is likely to be announced before the summer ends.

Any such deal is likely to see Madrid end their pursuit of Liverpool and Uruguay forward Luis Suarez, leaving bitter rivals Barcelona in pole position to sign the striker.

Benzema is action later this week as France play their final World Cup group game against Ecuador.
