Gus Poyet Sacked: Where did it all go wrong?

It was confirmed today that Sunderland have parted company with Head Coach Gus Poyet, with the Black Cats sitting just one point above the drop zone. Where did it all go wrong for the flamboyant Uruguayan?

From guiding Sunderland to an unlikely cup final, to forgetting to put eleven players on the pitch for the second half at home to Aston Villa. It has been a mighty fall for Gus Poyet at Sunderland. The problems start with the lack of goals at Sunderland this season, they have drawn seven matches 0-0 this season. No other team has had more than four in the Premier League.

They also have the worrying statistic of the fewest number of shots this season. It’s not even as if there defence has been incredibly solid, the Black Cats suffered a humiliating 8-0 defeat to Southampton in October. Being shaky at the back and goal shy up front is a recipe for disaster.

Another thing that has gone wrong for Poyet this campaign is his popularity levels among the Sunderland fanbase have plummeted. Accusing the fans of “living in the past” was hardly going to have a positive effect. It all became too much for a few Sunderland fans on  Saturday as they had to be restrained from the security staff at the Stadium of Light, as they tried to enter the technical area.

I’m also guessing it wasn’t to give Gus Poyet a friendly pat on the back. With the negative atmosphere around the ground, it has been extremely difficult to make the Stadium of Light a fortress this season. The Wearsiders have the second worse home record in the Premier League this season.

It really has been a season to forget for Sunderland fans and whoever succeeds Gus Poyet as manager will have an almighty job on their hands to keep the Black Cats in the top flight of English football.
