Burnley halt Man City’s preparations for Barcelona with 1-0 win

Manuel Pellegrini’s preparations for Barcelona in mid-week took a turn for the worse as they slipped further behind Chelsea with a 1-0 defeat to Burnley.

Neither keeper was tested in the opening half an hour but it was the home side who looked the more likely to find an opener as the likes of Sam Vokes and George Boyd pushed City.

The former returned from a long-term knee ligament injury and he almost beat Joe Hart early on with a good header from Kieran Trippier’s cross but Hart stood strong and saved easily.

City had a good chance when Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho fed Edin Dzeko but the Bosnian striker had his shot saved well by Tom Heaton.

Sergio Aguero was a silent figure for the most part but he did manage to create a chance in the second period after Pablo Zabaleta’s cross, whilst down the other end Boyd tested Hart with a good volley.

The former Hull City was a real menace for the City back-line and he proved to be the difference in the game as the winger hit a delightful effort into the bottom corner.

City had a last minute penalty appeal waived away as the score ended in favour of Sean Dyche’s side.
