Goals from Nacho Monreal and Danny Welbeck saw Arsenal secure their place in the semi final after seeing off Manchester United.

The game began with both teams having chances, and fourth minute yellow card for Hector Bellerin after a challenge on Ashley Young, putting him in a difficult position, marking Young for the next 86 minutes.

Both United and Arsenal had early opportunities to put themselves ahead with Manchester United’s Angel Di Maria making a cross to Young whose shot went wide.

The 25th minute saw Arsenal go ahead with Nacho Monreal’s shot finding the back of the net, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain beat Shaw, Smalling and Valencia before passing to Monreal. 1-0 Arsenal.

However, Manchester United were only four minutes behind finding their equalizer. An amazing cross from Angel Di Maria into the box met the head of Wayne Rooney who found the back of the net. 1-1.

Arsenal were on the attack, only a few minutes later with Oxide-Chamberlain finding the head of Danny Welbeck, whose shot was pushed out by David De Gea. Both teams were determined to find their winning goal with attack being at both ends.

However Di Maria found himself in referee’s book with a yellow card, one of seven awarded to Manchester United this evening.

Half time saw two Manchester United substitutions with Andera Herrea and Luke Shaw being replaced by Phil Jones and Michael Carrack, and Arsenal substitution only minutes later, with Oxlade-Chamberlain being substituted due to a hamstring injury and replaced by Aaron Ramsey.

The 60th minute saw Danny Welbeck put Arsenal ahead with his right footed shot finding the back of the net. An absolutely horrible back-pass from Valencia is fumbled by De Gea. Welbeck saw his opportunity, scored and celebrated against his former club. 2-1 Arsenal.

The 74th minute saw De Gea make the save of the game. After Santi Carzola attempts to volley the ball into the back of the net, forcing De Gea to use the full length of his body to tip the ball away with his fingertips.

Only a minute later, the ball was at the other end at the feet of Di Maria who threw himself to the ground in the area to try and obtain a penalty for United, and found himself in the referee’s book and in his anger grabbed Michael Oliver’s shirt in protest of his card, which resulted in a second yellow for the midfielder.

Referee Oliver, who showed nine yellow cards in the game, made an excellent decision after Adnan Januzaj went down in the area after challenging with Monreal, looking for a penalty in the 85th minute. Oliver saw it as a dive, and presented the yellow card.

Arsenal survived the five minutes of stoppage time to win 2-1 at Old Trafford. They will play Bradford or Reading in the semi finals.
