Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has said his players handed Arsenal victory in Monday night’s FA Cup quarter-final.

Former United striker Danny Welbeck scored the winner at Old Trafford as Arsenal won 2-1 to book their place in the FA Cup semi-final.

And, Van Gaal believes his side threw the game away and that he is disappointed.

“I’ve said in the dressing room we gave [the game] away by ourselves and that is the biggest disappointment, ” he told BBC Sport. “In the second half, we had the first chance also then we gave it away again.

“We don’t lose from the opponent, we lost from ourselves and it was very disappointing. You play this match to win; to beat the opponent, we wanted to be in the semi-final.”

Van Gaal further bemoaned his Angel Di Maria’s red card, saying: “With 10 men against 11 it’s very difficult to win, but we fought until the end and the fans were supporting us.”
