Portugal are on the verge of elimination from the World Cup after USA held them to a 2-2 draw on Sunday evening.

Portugal’s opening group game defeat to Germany saw them in desperate need to beat United States on Sunday or face the chances of not reaching the knock out stages of the World Cup and they got off to a perfect start when Manchester United winger Nani found space inside the six-yard box, before firing his country in front.

Jurgen Klinsmann’s side then came close as Clint Dempsey struck a sublime free-kick but his effort was just too high and narrowly went over the crossbar.

Dempsey would then go close again as he tested Beto, but the Portuguese keeper was on hand to deny the former Fulham man.

The second half saw the Americans continue to dominate and they scored two goals to put themselves in front and on course for qualification.

Jermaine Jones was on hand to score the equaliser, before Man of the Match Dempsey put his country in front.

Portugal looked dead and buried but a last-gasp equaliser from Varela still gives them hope on making the next round.
