Liverpool Legend: Man United fans on Evans’ side are stupid

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that those fans who have sided with Manchester United’s Jonny Evans are ‘stupid’.

Evans and Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse were involved in a spiting incident during the midweek Premier League clash at St James Park.

And, whilst Cisse has accepted his actions and been handed a seven match ban, Evans chose to deny the incident and has also been hit with a ban, of six games.

Carragher believes that those fans who have claimed Evans would not spit on opponent need to rethink their comments, telling the Daily Mail: “All those people who have said about Evans ‘he’s not that type of lad’. Who is then? Is there are a list somewhere of names who are ‘that type’? It is a stupid thing to say. It’s not about his character. It’s about whether he had a moment of madness, deliberately or not.”

“For Evans, the incident doesn’t look good at all. It would have been easy enough for him to spit well away from Cisse.”

Finally, the former Anfield defender touched on Cisse’s ban and said that he feels it to be excessive.

“Cisse has admitted being in the wrong and hit with a seven-game ban. I know it is a disgusting thing to do but I do think that punishment seems a little excessive, particularly if you compare it to an over-the-top tackle that would ‘only’ get three games.
