Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse has been banned for seven matches after accepting his Football Association charge of spitting at Manchester United’s Jonny Evans.

The incident occurred just before the half time interval during the Premier League clash, with both players initially involved after Evans had tackled the Senegalese striker.

Cisse then appeared to kick out at the United defender, sparking a reaction which saw Evans spit in his direction.

The Newcastle goalscorer then spits back, with the referee getting involved soon after to award a free-kick to the home side.

Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: “Both ourselves and Papiss agree that this kind of behaviour is not acceptable.

“In life, when you do something wrong you have to front up, admit your mistakes and accept the punishment. Papiss was proactive this morning in making a full and heartfelt apology, which he did in advance of any notification from the FA regarding this charge.”

Evans has yet to respond to the FA after being charged on Thursday, but has denied spitting at Cisse.
