A late Ashley Young goal gave Manchester United all three points against Newcastle United at St James Park on Wednesday evening.

The visitors started the game well and could have led from the opening minute after Wayne Rooney put Angel Di Maria through on goal, but the Argentine winger was denied by Fabricio Coloccini.

In the 10th minute, the Magpies had a good shout for a penalty when Emmanuel Riviere was hauled down by Chris Smalling, but referee Anthony Taylor waved away heavy appeals from John Carver’s side.

United continued to push for the opener but both Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera were unable to make the breakthrough.

In the 65th minute, St James’ Park erupted into applause Jonas Gutierrez made his emotional return to first-team football, following his battle with testicular cancer.

Both sides continued to search for the opener and it was United who broke the deadlock with just one minute remaining on the clock.

Young made the most of Tim Krul’s spilled ball, before poking the ball home.
