Philippe Coutinho scored a superb strike to help Liverpool beat Premier League champions Manchester City 3-1.

Brendan Rodgers’ side came close early on as Adam Lallana tested the form for Joe Hart but the England stopper kept out his fellow compatriot.

A minute later and Liverpool were on top again as Lallana continued to push forward, this time, finding Coutinho, who attempted to flick the ball into the back of the net but he was ruled out for offside.

Liverpool did take the lead when Vincent Kompany carelessly lost the ball to Coutinho, who combined with Raheem Sterling to set up Jordan Henderson, who smashed home a superb 20-yard strike.

City remained a threat when attacking and they looked to level the game through Sergio Aguero, but the Argentine could only see his lobbed effort hit the post.

Edin Dzeko would not be denied moments later though, as he was played in by David Silva, before firing past Simon Mignolet.

The second half continued from the first, thrilling, and it was Liverpool who would carve out a superb winner.

Coutinho was the man to score as he unleashed a superb 25-yard strike which left Hart with no chance.

The Merseyside club now move above Southampton and into fifth place in the Premier League; City remain second.
