Rooney brace puts Man United back ahead of Arsenal

Wayne Rooney’s brace was enough to give Manchester United a 2-0 win over Sunderland and put themselves back above Arsenal into third place in the Premier League.

Louis van Gaal’s side made a good start to the game as Rooney came close with a near post header after good work from Angel Di Maria.

Sunderland also had chances as Connor Wickham looked to upset Old Trafford, but his shot was saved by David De Gea, before the Spaniard also denied Jermain Defoe.

United then took over and created numerous chances before the half-time interval but neither Marcos Rojo or Ashley Young could find the back of the net.

The second half saw Adnan Januzaj introduced and it gave United more impetuous as they looked to break the deadlock.

Then, drama, in the 65th minute saw Radamel Falcao fouled in the area by John O ‘Shea, but the referee sent off Wes Brown instead and pointed to the penalty spot.

Wayne Rooney stepped up and smashed the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

And, the England captain doubled the lead with six minutes remaining as he poked the ball home from close range.
