Former Manchester United keeper Peter Schmeichel belives that David de Gea’s future will not be decided until the end of the season.

The Spanish international has less than 18 months remaining on his current deal at Old Trafford and has been strongly linked with a move back to Spain with Real Madrid showing increased interest.

Whilst the European champions continue to lurk, it was reported earlier this week that a deal could be reached by Friday, however, former keeper Schmeichel believes United fans will have to wait until the summer for a decision from the former Atletico Madrid keeper.

“I hope he will sign but today’s footballers don’t decide on their own,” he told the Daily Star. “They’ve got agents to advise them and I don’t know what kind of advice he’s getting. I suspect that he’s just having a look at how this season is going to pan out.

“All I know is what I read from the media but the only thing I really can say is I hope he will sign. I hope he gives everybody that bit of good news because it would have another effect on many other future dealings with players so hopefully he will sign.

“I have no idea what he’s like or how he likes Manchester or how he likes it here. You could excuse him for thinking it would be better to go back but I have no idea what his thinking is and at the end of the day it’s probably the advice he gets from his agent that will make the difference between what he’s doing.”
