Man United’s move for Clyne HIJACKED by Chelsea

Chelsea have hijacked Manchester United’s move for Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne, according to Express.

The English right-back has been in sublime form this season and has caught the attention of United boss Louis van Gaal, who remains keen to improve his full-back options after using the likes of Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young on the right side this season.

The 23-year-old has been in negotiations over a new and improved deal at St. Mary’s stadium since the turn of the year, but it is now understood that those talks have stalled.

Clyne is said to be considering his options after learning of United’s interest and is now fully expected to leave the club this coming summer.

However, despite United’s interest, Chelsea have now joined the race with boss Jose Mourinho keen to sign the youngster and replace Branislav Ivanovic in time.

His current deal at the club is due to expire in 2016, meaning United or Chelsea could secure a cheaper deal for the defender to stop Southampton losing the England international on a free transfer next year.

The Stockwell born defender joined Southampton in 2012 after spending four years with Crystal Palace.
