Liverpool have crashed out of the Europa League to Besiktas, losing 5-4 on penalties.

Approaching the game in Turkey, Brendan Rodgers’ side held a slight 1-0 lead but they did little in the opening half to improve on their lead and they were eventually made to pay as they exited the competition on penalties.

Mario Balotelli and Raheem Sterling had slight chances in the first half for the Merseyside club, whilst the home side failed to test Simon Mignolet.

However, Slaven Bilic’s half-time team-talk worked it’s magic as the hosts came out in a spirited mood.

Demba Ba came close on the hour mark, whilst Gokhan Tore was causing the Liverpool defence problems.

Pressure from the home side continued and it eventually paid off after Tolgay Urslan scored a brilliantly worked goal to level the tie up.

The game then filtered out to extra time, in which neither side tried to create chances, leading to penalties.

In fairness, both sides struck superb spot-kicks but it was Dejan Lovren, who at 4-4 had to score to keep the Anfield side in the tie.

He missed and the home fans went wild, knocking the Premier League side out.
