Torres excited to play Champions League football again

In a recent interview, Fernando Torres was happy to announce that he will play his first Champions League game for Atlético Madrid against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday evening.

The Spaniard has achieved 53 appearances in the Champions League when he played for Liverpool and Chelsea, but never featured during his time with the La Liga champions in his younger years.

Torres explained, “Playing in the Champions League is another good opportunity at this club, as Atlético where not in it while I played for them, I have experience in this competition. It’s where the best players compete and it’s where you need to be.”

The former Chelsea striker, who is on a two-year loan spell with Atletico, talked about the defeat to Real Madrid on Lisbon last year.

“Losing a final is not easy to take, maybe even more because it is a Champions League final and definitely even more so because of the way the team lost. I know that my teammates want to avenge what happened in Lisbon and there’s only one way, which is by reaching the final once again.

“The club and the fans are convinced that we are able to reach the final once again. That makes you see what the team’s mentality is all about.”

He then chose to touch on Diego Simeone, saying his character has not changed from player to coach.

“His character is the same as when he was a teammate, the same ideas and messages. He is always demanding and he always wants to be a winner, this is just what the club needs to be able to compete with the big clubs.”
