Goals from Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling gave Liverpool a 2-0 win over Southampton at St. Mary’s stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The game got off to a good start with Ronald Koeman’s side having the more of the chances and they could have had a penalty early on when Filip Djuricic was hauled down in the box by Emre Can, but the referee waived play on.

Just two minutes later and Liverpool were in front when Coutinho fired in a delightful effort to beat Fraser Forster via the crossbar.

Eljero Elia tried to produce an equaliser but he was denied by Simon Mignolet, who was in good form.

Chances were then few and far between as the score stayed the same through to half-time.

In truth, the second half was much of the same but Rodgers’s side did well to halt any attacking play by the home side.

And, they killed off the game late on when Sterling fired past Forster, although replays showed his effort took a number of deflections.
