Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal turned down the chance to make force through a lucrative return for Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer.

The 30-year-old has been linked with a return to Old Trafford this season after various on and off field problems.

Madrid president Florentino Perez is said to be keen on selling the Portuguese forward in the summer to make a number of further signings which the Spaniard hopes will give his side a prosperous future.

United are favourites to sign the former Sporting Lisbon winger, but reports in Spanish press claim the Old Trafford side failed to push through a move last July.

Reports go on to say that Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes held several meetings with United’s chief scout Martin Ferguson, but Van Gaal chose to stop negotiations.
