England are on the brink of elimination after two Luis Suarez goals saw them lose to Uruguay 2-1 on Thursday night.

Liverpool’s Luis Suarez returned from injury just in time to face England and he almost opened the scoring after five minutes but keeper Joe Hart was equal to his effort and palmed the ball away to safety.

Shortly after, Wayne Rooney came close for England with a superb curling effort and again moments later when he tested out the keeper with a headed effort following a corner from Steven Gerrard.

Cristian Rodriguez almost scored, but he was surprised about the time and space he had, prompted the impressive Hart to save the day again.

However, the Manchester City stopper could do nothing about Suarez’s opener, after the in-form striker was picked out by Edinson Cavani and he guided his cute header past Hart.

The second half would see Uruguay revert to a more defensive system and that allowed England to eventually find the equaliser through Rooney, after he was picked out by Glen Johnson.

However, they were level for just 10 minutes as Suarez profited from a Gerrard mistake and unleashed a superb effort past Hart to win the game and seal three very important points for Uruguay.

England now sit bottom of the group and will have to rely on the results for the remaining matches.
