Lacklustre Bayern held by Shakhtar

Shakhtar produced the performance of the night to hold Bayern Munich in the first-leg of their last-16 Champions League tie.

The visitors came into the game fresh off the back of a 8-0 win over Hamburg at the weekend but they found it hard to create any clear cut chances against their Ukrainian opposition on Tuesday night.

Thomas Muller did try to break the deadlock but his effort dragged just wide of the goal after good work from Arjen Robben.

The hosts were happy to sit back and allow Bayern to play, but they did press themselves midway through the half as Yaroslav Rakitskiy’s free kick tested Manuel Neuer.

The second half was a carbon copy of the first half, with both sides struggling to find their usual passing rhythm.

However, the visitors suffered a blow in the 65th minute when Xabi Alonso was sent off for picking up his second booking of the match for a foul on the lively Alex Teixeira.

The score would end 0-0 though and sees Pep Guardiola the favourites to progress with the second leg to be played at the Allianz Arena.
