Chelsea returned home to Stamford Bridge with a precious away goal after a 1-1 draw with Paris Saint Germain on Tuesday night.
The hosts made a dominant start to the match as Blaise Matuidi continued his fine form to test Thibaut Courtois, but the Belgian stopper would prove to be in fine form for the English side.
Moments later and Courtois would be in good form once more as he denied Zlatan Ibrahimovic from close range.
Edinson Cavani would then step up to test the former Atletico Madrid keeper but he tipped the Uruguayan striker’s effort just wide of the post.
Chelsea were struggling to come to terms with the threat of Laurent Blanc’s side, but they did take the lead when John Terry flicked on a cross to Branislav Ivanovic, who directed his header into the far corner.
The visitors would head into the break leading but Cavani would not be stopped as he was left unmarked moments after the restart to head in past Courtois.
Blanc’s side continued to attack and they tested Courtois on several more occasions.
First, Cavani would come close as he went past Ivanovic, before sending his effort just wide and he was followed by Ibrahimovic, who headed straight at the inspired Chelsea keeper.
The score would remain 1-1 at the final whistle and give Jose Mourinho’s side the advantage, heading into the second leg in March.
