Dani Alves’ close friend and former Barcelona team-mate Eric Abidal has urged the Catalan club to renew the defender’s contract.

Alves has been strongly linked with a move to England in recent weeks, with Manchester United extremely keen to offer him a lucrative three-year deal at Old Trafford.

Barca team-mate Lionel Messi is keen for Alves to remain at the Camp Nou and initiated talks with the club on Monday, whilst boss Luis Enrique will construct talks at the end of the season.

But, former team-mate and close friends Eric Abidal has begged the Catalan club to renew the defender’s deal sooner rather than later.

Speaking to Onda Cero, Abidal said: “They have to renew it. He is the best right-back in the world.

“If I was president, I would have called him to renew. Barca cannot sign and they have to keep their best players.

“Age has no importance, look at Andrea Pirlo, and they are still renewing [his contracts].”
