Louis van Gaal has bemoaned his start to life as Manchester United manager, saying that his current sixth place in the Premier League is ‘not too good’.

Van Gaal replaced David Moyes over the summer but has struggled to turn the club’s fortunes around, despite spending a remarkable amount of money on big stars such as Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao.

United battled back twice against West Brom on Monday night and secured a 2-2 draw, but the former Barcelona and Netherlands coach believes his start has not been good enough.

He told reporters following the draw: “It’s not too good. When we see the games, normally we are the better team. When you have 12 points out of eight games, in my opinion eight points is too few.

“Now we have to play against Chelsea. It’s another level, you cannot compare West Brom, with great respect to them because it’s fantastic to play here, with the stadium and fans.

“But I think Chelsea is another level and Manchester City also so we have to see if we can beat them.”
