Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that Real Madrid sold Angel Di Maria after his demands were too ‘greedy’.

Di Maria was arguably Real Madrid’s most in-form and impressive player last season, helping the Spanish side to a Champions League win over rivals Atletico Madrid in May.

However, the Argentine winger was sold to Manchester United after failing to agree a new contact. A contract which former boss Carlo Ancelotti says was impossible due to his large wage demands.

“Di Maria demanded a lot of money and preferred to leave in order to earn more elsewhere. The club simply couldn’t give him the money he wanted,” Ancelotti told Cadena Cope.

“There are times when a club has to say no. You cannot change the club’s policy for just one player.”

Di Maria was replaced by James Rodriguez at Madrid and Ancelotti has claimed that the Colombian attacker is ‘worth the money’.

“James is worth the money. When you pay £63m, it’s because you think a player is worth it,” he said.

“If the president told me to play someone, I’d step down right away…”
