Arsenal’s chances of signing Barcelona midfielder Sergi Samper are slim, according to a source close to the Catalan club.

19-year-old Samper made his first team debut for Barcelona in their opening Champions League tie with APOEL last week and has since gained plaudits from media men and several coaches in the European game.

One of those admirers has been Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who according to some reports in England is ready to meet the youngster’s release fee of just £9.4m.

However, speaking to Football Express News on Monday morning, a source close to the club has re-affirmed that the midfielder will remain at the Camp Nou.

“Sergi and Munir [El Haddadi] will not be leaving the club. It is natural for them to be linked with clubs given their talent, but they will not be allowed to leave.

“Both are close to a new contract which will make leaving almost impossible.”

Samper, like striker Munir, has been given a big chance in the senior side already this season by new boss Luis Enrique, who has handed the latter four starts in five games.
