Liverpool legend Carragher: We have defensive problems

Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher believes his old club is still suffering from frailties in defence.

The Reds saw their Premier League title challenge undone by errors at the back during the final weeks of the run-in, and boss Brendan Rodgers is in the process of significantly strengthening his backline.

Last night’s International Champions Cup final defeat at the hands of bitter rivals Manchester United gave Carragher cause for concern.

He said on Twitter: “Watched the Lfc v Man Utd game – still defensive issues for Lfc.”

Carragher was also impressed by the performance of United schemer Ander Herrera, who arrived earlier on this summer from La Liga side Athletic Bilbao.

He added: “Like the look of Herrera from what I’ve seen. It’s only pre-season!”

Carragher, who believes Chelsea will win the title this time around, spent his entire career at Anfield, before retiring 12 months ago.

Liverpool were last term’s surprise package, with many pundits tipping them to battle it out for a Champions League spot but few anticipating a genuine challenge for top spot.

Rodgers appeared to be on course to take the Reds to their first title since the Premier League era began, but a home loss to Chelsea was followed by a 3-3 draw at Crystal Palace, who came back from 3-0 down, and Manchester City finished on top.
