Liverpool icon speaks out on United’s chances

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has tipped bitter rivals Manchester United to bounce back from the disappointment of last season.

The Red Devils ended last term in seventh position, which meant they failed to secure qualification for European football.

They also missed out on silverware and sacked manager David Moyes in April, despite the Scot penning a six-year contract upon his appointment in the summer of 2013.

United have since appointed former Holland head coach Louis van Gaal as his permanent successor and signed defender Luke Shaw and midfield man Ander Herrera from Southampton and Athletic Bilbao respectively.

Carragher, who believes Chelsea will win the title this time around, spent his entire career at Anfield, before retiring 12 months ago.

He said on Twitter: “Man U certainly look better than last season but only pre-season games, although they struggled in pre-season last season so may bode well.”

Liverpool were last term’s surprise package, with many pundits tipping them to battle it out for a Champions League spot but few anticipating a genuine challenge for top spot.

Boss Brendan Rodgers appeared to be on course to take the Reds to their first title since the Premier League era began, but a home loss to Chelsea was followed by a 3-3 draw at Crystal Palace, who came back from 3-0 down, and Manchester City finished on top.
