Ezri Konsa has joined Premier League champions Arsenal from Aston Villa in a £55 million deal, signing a four-year contract with the option of a further year.

The 28-year-old England defender says he is proud to be joining one of football’s elite clubs after weeks of negotiations between the two sides finally concluded on Wednesday.

The agreement could earn Villa up to an additional £4 million in add-ons, providing some financial consolation for a club that has been forced into significant squad changes this summer.

“It’s a privilege to be here and can’t wait to get started,” said Konsa, who admitted he had spoken with Arsenal’s England internationals about the move while away at the World Cup.

“I want to keep winning, I’m hungry to win and that’s what I’m here for. It’s a proud moment for me and my family to play for one of the best teams in the world.”

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta praised the defender’s qualities, saying: “Ezri is a defender of high quality, whose athleticism, composure and tactical intelligence have established him as one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers.”

Berta added that Konsa’s versatility would prove crucial, noting his ability to play in both central defence and at right-back while maintaining the defensive standards required to challenge for major trophies.

Arsenal quartet Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka were among those who encouraged Konsa to make the switch during the World Cup in North America.

Konsa revealed: “They said I’ll enjoy it. I’m looking forward to training with them and playing with them.”

Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarrell Quansah had also been considered as an option for the Gunners before a fee for Konsa was finally agreed, highlighting Arsenal’s determination to strengthen their defensive options this summer.

The need for reinforcements has been made clear by injuries to key players, with William Saliba ruled out for an extended period with a back issue and Jurrien Timber sidelined with a groin problem for the opening weeks of the season.

That injury situation left Ben White as Arsenal’s only fit right-back and 21-year-old Cristhian Mosquera as the only right-sided centre-back option to partner Gabriel Magalhaes.

Arsenal have already invested heavily this window, bringing in midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle for £75 million and Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis for £34 million.

Konsa made 286 appearances for Villa after joining from Brentford in July 2019, helping the club win the Europa League in May, their first European trophy since 1982.

He also played every minute of England’s World Cup campaign as Thomas Tuchel’s side reached the semi-finals before losing to Argentina, then claiming third place by beating France.

His departure is another significant blow for Villa, coming after Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers, and Lucas Digne also left the club during the current transfer window.

Rogers’ £117 million move to Chelsea set a record fee for an English player, underlining the scale of the rebuild Unai Emery now faces at Villa Park.

Villa’s sales have been driven partly by their obligations under Uefa’s squad cost ratio rules, which restrict spending to 70 percent of football-related revenue, having already been fined £9.5 million and £19.4 million for previous breaches.

The club’s financial position means they have little room to manoeuvre, with their accounts for the two years ending June 2024 showing combined losses of over £200 million.

Al-Hilal may yet test Villa’s resolve further before the 1 September transfer deadline with a renewed approach for striker Ollie Watkins, adding further uncertainty to Emery’s planning ahead of the new season.
