Chelsea have confirmed the signing of striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton, marking a notable shift in the club’s recruitment approach under new management.
The former Manchester United and Arsenal forward, aged 35, has put pen to paper on a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with neither club disclosing the transfer fee.
Welbeck enjoyed the finest goalscoring season of his career at Brighton, netting 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances, with only three English players surpassing that tally last term.
He becomes Chelsea’s third signing of the summer window, following the arrivals of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa and Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
“When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it’s something that fills you with such immense pride,” Welbeck said, reflecting on his decision to make the move to west London.
“I know a few of the boys already and I’ve had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection.”
“I’ve got that fire in my belly and I’m ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud,” the striker added.
The signing represents a clear departure from the transfer strategy employed by Chelsea’s owners since their 2022 takeover, which had heavily prioritised acquiring younger talent for the squad.
Welbeck’s arrival immediately raises questions about the futures of the club’s existing centre-forward options, including Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu, and Nicolas Jackson.
His 13 league goals last season came from 12.5 expected goals, reflecting a striker who finishes at expectation and carries a big chance conversion rate of 47.6 percent, narrowly behind Joao Pedro’s 53.9 percent.
Welbeck also contributed 20 open play chances for Brighton last season and registered 132 runs in behind, demonstrating he still has the mobility to stretch Premier League defences consistently.
Out of possession, his pressing numbers remain impressive, averaging 32 pressures per 90 minutes in the final third, a figure comparable to Joao Pedro and ahead of Nicolas Jackson, who spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich.
His durability further strengthens the case for his signing, having made 37 league appearances for Brighton last season, with 26 of those coming as starts across the campaign.
Welbeck began his career at Manchester United before joining Arsenal in a £16m deal in 2014, spending five years in north London before brief stints at Watford and then Brighton from 2020 onwards.
The experienced forward has represented England on 42 occasions, scoring 16 international goals, though his last cap came in 2018 and he was not selected for Thomas Tuchel’s 2026 World Cup squad.
