Jermain Defoe has left his role as Woking manager after just four months, describing the experience as one that will make him stronger for future challenges in football management.
The former England striker, now 43, was appointed as Neal Ardley’s replacement back in March, taking charge of the National League side with considerable fanfare surrounding his arrival.
Defoe managed just six league games during his time in charge, winning two of them, as Woking finished the previous season in tenth place in the National League table.
His final game in charge came on Tuesday when Woking suffered a 1-0 pre-season friendly defeat against Braintree Town, his ninth and last match managing the club.
Woking confirmed on Thursday that the two parties had “mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect”, a departure that comes just two weeks before the new campaign opener against Sutton United.
In an Instagram post, Defoe said: “Unfortunately, circumstances have ultimately made it impossible for me to continue in the position.”
He added: “I am extremely proud of the work undertaken during my time at the club and genuinely felt that we were building something special.”
Defoe also stated: “My time at Woking FC has been an eye-opening managerial experience and one that will undoubtedly make me stronger for the next challenge in my career.”
The timing is particularly surprising given that Defoe had reportedly been expressing excitement about the upcoming season just days before the announcement was made.
BBC Surrey and Sussex sports editor Robin Grey noted that many players joined Woking this summer specifically because of Defoe’s presence, with fans energised by his appointment as head coach.
Grey also pointed out that Defoe’s statement thanked owner Todd Johnson but conspicuously made no mention of director of football Jody Brown, which may offer clues about the reasons behind the split.
Given that Defoe had reportedly impressed the club with his coaching and training ground work, Grey suggested the reasons for his departure likely lie off the pitch rather than on it.
Before moving into management, Defoe had a remarkable playing career spanning 763 senior appearances, during which he scored an impressive 305 goals for clubs including West Ham, Tottenham, Portsmouth, and Sunderland.
He also represented England on 57 occasions at international level, finding the net 20 times before retiring from playing in 2022 after a distinguished career.
Defoe previously gained coaching experience as part of an interim staff at Rangers in 2021 before working within the Spurs academy, which he left in 2024 to pursue a full-time managerial position.
Woking now face the unenviable task of finding a new head coach with the new National League season less than a fortnight away.
