Liverpool’s club record signing Denise O’Sullivan is expected to depart Anfield this summer, just six months after completing her high-profile move to the club.
A return to the National Women’s Soccer League is considered the most likely outcome, with Gotham FC currently favourites to secure her signature.
The Republic of Ireland international arrived at Liverpool in January in a deal worth £300,000, immediately establishing herself as one of the squad’s most important players.
Her performances across 13 appearances, including nine in the league, underlined why Liverpool were so keen to bring her to the club in the first place.
O’Sullivan also played a key role in helping Gareth Taylor’s side reach the Women’s FA Cup semi-finals during what was otherwise a difficult campaign for the Reds.
Reports suggest her move to Gotham FC could be structured as an initial one-year loan with an obligation-to-buy clause attached to the agreement.
Sources have told BBC Sport that Liverpool are in positive discussions with O’Sullivan and Gotham and are expected to receive a large fee in return for her departure.
The 32-year-old’s decision to leave is understood to be a personal one, driven by a desire to return to the United States, where she built much of her career.
O’Sullivan spent nine seasons with North Carolina Courage, making over 150 appearances and captaining the side before her move to Merseyside earlier this year.
She is equally well-regarded on the international stage, having earned 132 caps for the Republic of Ireland and played a central role in their Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign in 2026.
Her potential exit represents a significant blow to Liverpool’s summer rebuild following a disappointing 2025-26 season that left the club with plenty of work to do.
Liverpool have already made three signings this window but losing O’Sullivan compounds frustrations, particularly after they were also unable to make goalkeeper Jennifer Falk’s loan move permanent.
Despite those setbacks, the club still hope to be active in the transfer market as they look to strengthen the squad ahead of the coming season.
