Chelsea have wrapped up the signing of Atalanta right-back Marco Palestra for a fee of approximately £47m, inclusive of add-ons.
The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on a six-year contract, with the option of an additional year, making him the first signing of Xabi Alonso’s managerial reign at Stamford Bridge.
Palestra had appeared set for a sentimental return to childhood club Inter Milan, but Chelsea moved decisively to beat the Italian side’s £43m offer.
Sources in Italy indicate that Chelsea also tabled a significantly more attractive wage package to seal the deal ahead of their rivals.
“A lot of things convinced me to join Chelsea, one of the best clubs in the world,” Palestra said, expressing his excitement at the move.
“We have so many talented players here, a very strong squad and manager in Xabi,” he added, highlighting his confidence in the project under Alonso.
“He has spoken to me about how he wants us to play, which is exciting, and we can’t wait to compete in the Premier League.”
Palestra spent last season on loan at Cagliari, where he was named Serie A’s defender of the year following an outstanding campaign.
During his loan spell, Palestra attempted 73 dribbles of more than 5m, the most by any defender in Serie A, with only Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz recording more across the competition.
His 70 successful dribbles were the highest of any defender across Europe’s top 10 leagues, according to Opta data.
He also won 15 fouls in the final third, the joint-most by a defender across Europe’s top five leagues, while no Serie A player covered more distance at sprinting speed during that same campaign.
Former Cagliari sporting director Guido Angelozzi, who signed Palestra last summer, revealed that the club faced significant competition from across Italy and Europe to secure his services.
Angelozzi told BBC Sport: “The first thing that struck me was his maturity. He is a very curious young man – always willing to listen, yet with a strong personality.”
He added: “As a player, Marco combines technical quality with footballing intelligence. He has a great sense of timing, the ability to read situations and a natural ease in making decisions under pressure – qualities that are rare at his age.”
Angelozzi also noted that Chelsea, along with other leading European clubs, had sought character references before completing the transfer.
Palestra made his senior Atalanta debut in the Europa League in December 2023, and his loan spell at Cagliari accelerated his development enough to earn a senior Italy call-up during the World Cup play-offs.
Chelsea had monitored Palestra for more than a year, and his versatility has impressed the club, as he can operate at full-back or wing-back and began his career in central midfield.
His arrival is seen as a potential indicator that Alonso intends to deploy a back-three system, a formation he used to great effect when guiding Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title in 2024.
Beyond the Palestra deal, Chelsea are prioritising a centre-back signing, with Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix considered their primary target, while a move for Rayo Vallecano full-back Pep Chavarria is also under discussion.
Sunderland have rejected an £8m bid from Chelsea for captain Granit Xhaka, who previously worked under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.
Chelsea also have agreed deals in place for striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg and winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting, with Strasbourg midfielder Valentin Barco expected to complete a move as well.
Midfielder Enzo Fernandez is keen to leave Chelsea and is attracting interest from Real Madrid, while Serie A side Como have held talks over a potential move for Trevoh Chalobah.
